Triple-Swap Renal Transplants
A triple-swap kidney transplant operation was announced in a news conference on 1st Aug 2003, at the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Transplant Center, which said it believed that this was the first time 3 simultaneous kidney transplants have been performed. Other transplant experts said they had not heard of another three-way exchange in the nation.
The three kidney receipients are:: 1. Jeremy Weiser-Warschoff, 13 years old; 2. Tracey Stahl, a very ill mother of two from Johnston, Pa. and 3. Germaine Allum, who is from Trinidad. The 3 respective donors are :: 1.Paul Boissiere, a soft-spoken 30-year-old electrical engineer from Trinidad and Germaine Allum's fiancee, 2. Jeremy's family friend, Julia Tower of Hyattsville, Md. and 3. Tracey Stahl's sister, Connie Dick of Latrobe, Pa.
Months in the making, the exchange was the only way all three recipients could have received a kidney, the lead surgeon, Dr. Robert A. Montgomery, said, because of tissue, blood or antibody incompatibilities among the donors and their originally designated recipients.
With 55,000 people on the national waiting list for a kidney, the United Network for Organ Sharing said, and only about 25 percent a year likely to get a transplant, Johns Hopkins said it was trying to explore novel ways of matching organ donors and recipients.
Dr. Montgomery, who directs the Johns Hopkins incompatible-transplant program, said the center has created a "matchmaker system that attempts to pair all of our incompatible donors and recipients." A former patient contributed money to cover the salary of a coordinator, who identifies the matches, he said.
Of the possibility of death for donors, Dr. Stephen T. Bartlett of the University of Maryland said: "The risk is about 3 in 10,000. The chances of dying are low, but real and present." Other dangers include excess bleeding, blood clots to the lung and missed injuries to the bowel.
The transplant operations — which cost about $92,000 each — were performed on 28th July, 2003, by three surgical teams, who worked from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m..

NeckTies and Glaucoma
Those of you smartly dressed ones with neckties, here is something for you to ponder on. Research reported in the British Journal of Ophthalmology recently showed that a tight necktie raises blood pressure in the eye. An increase in the intraocular pressure results in glaucoma which can lead to damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision.
So you smartly dressed men out there, you should think twice about how tight you are wearing a necktie because it could increase your chances of developing glaucoma and subsequent blindness.

Pizza and Cancer
First it was Tom Yum Soup and Cancer, now we have the Pizza and Cancer link. A study has been done on 3000 Italians with cancer of the stomach and digestive tract and 5000 others with other diseases.
The results according to the researcher based in the Pharmacology Institute of Milan showed that those who ate pizza once or many times a week were less likely to have cancer than those who do not. Pizza eaters had 35% less oral cancer, 59% less cancer of the oesophagus and 26% less colonic cancer!
The secret according to Silvano Gallus who led the research, appeared to be the humble tomato.
Before all of you rush out to Pizza Hut or Domino's, a word of warning from epidimiologist, Carlo La Vecchia : "There is nothing to indicate that pizza is the only thing responsible for these results".

Breast Cancer & Fat Intake
A new study, reported in the latest issue of the Lancet reopens the question, long dismissed by researchers, of whether women who eat high-fat diets increase their risk of breast cancer.
The study found that those who average more than 90 grams of fat a day have roughly double the risk of those who eat just 37 grams.
The study, published in this week's Lancet medical journal, was conducted at Cambridge University in England and involved 13,070 women who kept diet records from 1993-97.
By 2002, 168 of the women had developed breast cancer. Each of those cases was matched with four healthy women of the same age who had filled out the questionnaires and diaries around the same time as the women who developed breast cancer had.
The women who ate the most saturated fat had twice the breast cancer risk as those who ate the least.
Marji McCullough, an epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society, said researchers disagree over whether a questionnaire or food diary is more accurate.
Dr. Elio Riboli, a nutrition and cancer expert, said, "These results reopen entirely the issue of the importance of investigating more, and with better data, the saturated fat-breast cancer hypothesis."
Experiments in lab animals also indicated that high fat intake could increase the likelihood of breast cancer.

Prostate and Breast Ca--Masturbation and Lactation--
Masturbation according to old wives' tales can lead to physical weakness, weak knees and blindness. Now there is some good news regarding this self pleasuring. A study carried out in Australia by a Graham Giles of The Cancer Council Victoria in Melbourne has shown that frequent masturbation could protect from prostate cancer.
The study was recently reported in New Scientist. The study asked 1079 men with prostate cancer to fill in a questionnaire detailing their sexual habits, and compared their responses with those of 1259 healthy men of the same age. The team concludes that the more men ejaculate between the ages of 20 and 50, the less likely they are to develop prostate cancer.
Why should ejaculating more often cut the risk of prostate cancer? The team speculates that ejaculation prevents carcinogens building up in the gland.
This findings suggest an intriguing parallel between prostate cancer and breast cancer, as recent studies indicate that lactation reduces a woman's risk of breast cancer, perhaps because this also flushes out carcinogens.
If the findings of this study is confirmed, in future, the health worker while advising the wife to lactate and breast feed the baby, to reduce the risks of breast cancer; the husband will be advised to masturbate to reduce the risks of prostate cancer.

If music be the food of life---14.07.03
Exploring the role of music in human life by Robert S. Boyd is an article exploring music-human relationship.
Charles Darwin, the father of evolutionary theory, wrote in 1871: "As neither the enjoyment nor the capacity of producing musical notes are faculties of the least use to man in reference to his daily habits of life, they must be ranked among the most mysterious with which he is endowed."
The explanations for the universality of music include what Darwin suggested that it is a sexual system, designed to attract mates; others suggested that music creates social cohesion, strengthening group bonds against outsiders; others assert that the most important function of music is to regulate or influence emotions for music makes us happy sad, elated and even can create a high.
Researchers expect their music studies - aided by the latest techniques of genetics and brain imaging - to shed new light on the way brains work and help people suffering from brain damage or disease.

Incredible Shrinking Y---09.07.03
Came across this interesting article in the New York Times by MAUREEN DOWD, it is subtitled "Why, oh Y, are men so insecure?".
So all you males out there should give it a read
The article can be found here
I have decided to copy the article in its entirety here, read and learn of the following : self-love of the Y sperm : narcissism :praying mantises : green spoon worm : female midge : orb-weaving spider : metrosexuals. All showing that the male of the human species is in decline.
The darlings have been fretting for some years now that they may be rendered unnecessary if women get financial and biological independence, learning how to reproduce and refinance without them. What if nature played a cruel trick and demoted men, so they had to be judged merely by their appearance, pliability and talent for gazing raptly at the opposite sex, no matter how bored?
New research on the Y chromosome shows that my jittery male friends are not paranoid; they are in an evolutionary shame spiral.
As Nicholas Wade wrote in The Times: "Although most men are unaware of the peril, the Y chromosome has been shedding genes furiously over the course of evolutionary time, and it is now a fraction of the size of its partner, the X chromosome. . . . The decay of the Y stems from the fact that it is forbidden to enjoy the principal advantage of sex, which is, of course, for each member of a pair of chromosomes to swap matching pieces of DNA with its partner."
Mr. Wade said that biologists in Cambridge, Mass., had made a remarkable discovery: "Denied the benefits of recombining with the X, the Y recombines with itself."
The ultimate guys' night out. Simply put, the Y chromosome figured out a Herculean way to save itself from extinction by making an incredibly difficult hairpin turn and swapping molecular material with itself.
Self-love as a survival mechanism: the unflinching narcissism of men may send women into despair at times, but it has saved their sex for the next 5 million or 10 million years.
But, according to Olivia Judson, science's answer to the sensual British cook Nigella Lawson, men may need more than narcissism to survive.
Dr. Judson, a 33-year-old evolutionary biologist at Imperial College in London who has written a book about animals in a Dear Abby style, or Deer Abby, under the pen name Dr. Tatiana, says the worm has turned. "For a long time, it was assumed that promiscuity was good for males and bad for females in terms of the number of kids they could have," she explains. "But it wasn't until 1988 that it really started to become evident that females were benefiting from having sex with lots of males, with more promiscuous females having more and healthier offspring."
In her book, Dr. Judson writes about powerful babes, noting that females in more than 80 species, like praying mantises, have been caught devouring their lovers before, during or after mating. "I'm particularly fond," she told me, "of the green spoon worm. . . . The male is 200,000 times smaller, effectively a little parasite who lives in her reproductive tract, fertilizing her eggs and regurgitating sperm through his mouth."
And then there's the tiny female midge, who plunges her proboscis into the male midge's head during procreation. As Dr. Judson told the journalist Ken Ringle, "Her spittle turns his innards to soup, which she slurps up, drinking until she's sucked him dry."
The Economist recently reported on a variation of the creepy-crawly girl-eats-boy love stories. The male orb-weaving spider kills himself before the female has a chance to. Biologists now believe that the male orb-weaver dies when he turns himself into a plug to prevent other males from copulating, thus ensuring his genes are more likely to live on.
In a new book called "Y: The Descent of Men," Steve Jones, a professor of genetics at University College in London, says males, always a genetic "parasite," have devolved to become the "second sex."
The news that Dolly the sheep had been cloned without masculine aid sent a frisson through the Y populace, he writes, because men began to fear that science would cause nature to return to its original, feminine state and men would fade from view.
The Y chromosome, "a mere remnant of its once mighty structure," is worried about size. "Men are wilting away," Dr. Jones writes. "From sperm count to social status and from fertilization to death, as civilization advances, those who bear Y chromosomes are in relative decline."
Perhaps that's why men are adapting, becoming more passive and turning into "metrosexuals," the new term for straight men who are feminized, with a taste for facials, grooming products and home design.
Better to be an X chromosome than an ex-chromosome.

Farewell Courageous Twins---09.07.03
The Bijani twins were inseparable in life as they were conjoined twins, joined at the heads, a condition called craniophagus, for 29 years of their lives. Their dream wish was to be separated so that they could lead separate lives.
Though aware that at best the chances of their surgical success was 50-50, they courageously decided to chance it. Ladan Bijani said "If God wants us to live the rest of our lives as two separate independent individuals, we will".
But there was to be no happy ending, after a marathon operation the twins, Ladan and Laleh Bijani, died soon after they were separated. In a manner, they attained their wish, even though it was for so brief a time.
Farewell the courageous twins, the world grieves for the two of you, farewell.

Plagiocephaly-Flat Head Syndrome 08.07.03
Recently I met a lady with a 6-month old baby with a flat head. She had been following advice from friends not to allow the baby to go to sleep on her tummy and now the baby is starting to have a flat head, or in medic speak-plagiocephaly. She wanted some advice, so I did a search on the net and came out with this.
What is plagiocephaly?
Positional plagiocephaly is when a baby's head develops a flat spot or becomes asymmetrical due to some kind of external pressure. Many babies are born with abnormally shaped heads as a result of the pressure exerted on them during birth, but most babies' heads will correct themselves within about six weeks. If the baby's head remains asymmetrical beyond six weeks, or if a flat area appears after six weeks, you'll want to see your pediatrician for referral to a specialist. (Babies with severe plagiocephaly may also have prominent foreheads, misaligned ears, and uneven facial features.)
A common reason that some babies develop a flat spot is that they spend so much time on their back. Starting in the early 90s, parents were told to put their babies to sleep on their back every night to prevent SIDS. While this advice may have saved thousands of babies' lives, experts have also noted a fivefold increase in the incidence of misshapen heads since then.
Treatment for plagiocephaly is repositional therapy which involves allowing the baby to be on its tummy very often during its active waking hours, under supervision.

HRT : To Use or Not to 02.07.03
In a recent issue of the Medical Journal Of Australia, this question was explored :Hormone replacement therapy: to use or not to use?
The main conclusions of this paper by Rodney J Baber, Justine L O'Hara and Frances M Boyle are as follows :
1.The main indication for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is to control menopausal symptoms and improve quality of life. Ideally, withdrawal of HRT should be attempted after 4–5 years of therapy.
2.HRT reduces fracture risk and remains appropriate therapy for osteoporosis, particularly in women with symptoms.
3.HRT is not appropriate for primary or secondary cardioprotection.
4.HRT leads to a small increase in breast cancer incidence, which increases with duration of therapy and age.
5.HRT increases the risk of thromboembolism.
6.Patient management and therapy should be reviewed annually with risk–benefit counselling.

Humour : English & You 01.07.03
For those of you who watch what you eat... Here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies.
1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
3. The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
4. The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you. Speak more Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin or Tamil or any other other than English .

More on Designer Babies 28.06.03
Designer babies are the result of a screening technique called Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis or PGD. This technique was used to select Jamie to be the genetic twin of his brother Charlie.
PGD is a controversial topic and will be discussed soon in Madrid, where fertility experts will meet.
PGD is utilise primarily to choose healthy embryos for fertility treatment. Being able to choose the healthy embryos also means that fewer need to be implanted and thus improve the results/success from the present 27%. Why fewer implanted can improve results, the answer is that there will be fewer multiple pregnancies which usually cause complications.
What is controversial, is that it can be used also to beget designer babies, usually these babies are chosen to save existing ones, like Jamie for Charlie.
Lone says : After the conference in Madrid, there will be more to say regarding designer babies

Kegel's Exercise for MAN 28.06.03
Kegel's exercise or pelvic floor exercise is often associated with ladies, especially those who have weaken vaginal muscles after childbirth.
Kegel's exercise is named after the late Arnold Kegel not Arnold Schwarzenegger, an American gynecologist. He developed them to help women regain bladder control by strengthening their pelvic floor muscles, which can become weak during pregnancy and after childbirth. This weakness can cause incontinence of urine as well as the sensation of a loose vagina during sex. Kegel exercise is done by contracting the pelvic muscles as if one was trying to hold in urine or stopping peeing during micturition. For a more graphic description of how the ladies do it, goto this link.
Now, coming back to the actual topic, this is regarding MAN and Kegel's. A team at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Los Angeles studied 38 men who had cancerous prostate glands removed. In this study the team found that those patients who were instructed to do Kegel's exercise after surgery became urinary incontinent much earlier than those not told to do so.
Lone says : The team did not address other conditions, but these exercises may improve other things, male, than just urinary incontinence!

Alternative cholesterol lowering agent 27.06.03
More on alternative to Statins. Lone knew drinking those many any cups of Green Tea would bring some good. A new study out of Vanderbilt University shows cholesterol-lowering effects from a pill formulated with extracts from green tea. Recently this study has been reported in various papers and websites :Independent-Tea can lower cholesterol; the Daily Mail-Have a nice cup of cholesterol reducer; Daily Mirror-Tea lowers cholesterol and FoodIngredientsFirst.com-Green Tea's Cholesterol lowering effects.
The study is the first placebo-controlled clinical trial to confirm the cholesterol-lowering properties of green tea in humans. The study subjects were already on a low fat diet and at the end of the study, total cholesterol was lowered 11%; LDL lowered 16% and triglycerides and HDL were increased 2%. The researchers recommended further studies to be done.
The NHS Centre for Research and Dissemination, based at the University of York, has this to say about the study :"In conclusion, the findings of this well designed and conducted trial appear to be reliable. However, they may not be generalisable to adults with mild to moderate hypercholesterolaemia in the UK, particularly those taking the types of medication and with the diseases stated above, which reduces the applicability of the findings".

Statins 27.06.03
Now before you all think that Lone has an unusual fixation on breasts, (how many of us don't, to a certain degree), let's move on to things closer to the heart, let's focus on Statins. Like HRT, Statins are big big earners for the pharmaceutical industry, ever since they were introduced into the therapeutic armamenterium some 15 years ago. If one looks at this article:Statins: beyond cholesterol, the industry is looking for more indications other then elevated cholesterol for statins.
These new indications include strengthening the failing heart, to strengthening bones and even keeping Alzheimer's disease at bay. But before these new indications are uploading onto the medical community and the patients, they should be put through the test of time, so that we do not land ourselves with problems that are being faced by HRT.
For statins are not without risks and complications and time may only reveal more. In 5% of cases they do not even lower elevated cholesterol, they can also cause rhabdomyolysis, a condition where muscles are lysed and the byproducts cause renal failure.
All the same, for those interested, do read the article. (Registration is required, but it is Free).
Looks like our The People's Paper-Star also has an article on Statins, it's entitled ‘Drug reduces cholesterol’; looks like it also has the ppeople's heart!. The statin mentioned at least twice in this article is Atorvastatin calcium. This article, correctly , also mentioned that life style changes can also lower cholesterol; in addition it should also be stated that statins like all drugs, do have side effects and complications when used. So, stop smoking, lose some weight and start exercising.

More Good News 26.06.03
Now for more good news. It's okay for ladies to wear bras with metallic wired supports, there have been no further reports of lightning strikes.
Now for the really good news, this is regarding the link between Breast Cancer and Power Links, those electrical and not money ones. Read for yourself below:
Study Debunks Power Lines-Breast Cancer Link
Exposure to electric fields does not cause breast cancer, contrary to what many activists and scientists had suspected, reports a comprehensive study released today.
Researchers with the 10-year, $2.5 million Long Island Breast Cancer Study say they could find no link between breast tumors and the electromagnetic fields from power lines, household wiring and appliances, reports the Long Island, N.Y., newspaper Newsday. The electric fields in the homes of 576 women with breast cancer were no different from those in the homes of 585 women without breast cancer.
The cancer specialist who first suggested the possible connection -- epidemiologist Richard G. Stevens of the University of Connecticut Health Center -- agreed with the results. "That's good evidence that [electric] fields at the levels you typically find in homes do not increase risk of breast cancer," he told Newsday.
Stevens and others had theorized that exposure to electric fields suppresses the brain's production of the hormone melatonin, leading to increased production of estrogen. Increased exposure to estrogen has been linked to breast cancer. But a National Cancer Institute spokesman says the new study "laid to rest" this and other similar theories.

News--Good & Bad 26.06.03
After all that faze about the Speech, lets get back to things, medical.
First the Good news, a dietary supplement has been found to possibly cure Coke addiction, not the Cola versi. The said supplement is the amino-acid derivative N-acetylcysteine which has been found to restore normal levels of the neurotransmitter glutamate in the part of the brain linked to addiction. It has been found that cocaine addicted rats when given this supplement, could curb their cocaine cravings and their brain damage is lessen. It is hope that this supplement may also work for the other addictions eg. heroin, alcohol. The article can be found here
And now for the Bad news, this is regarding, "HRT--Hormonal Replacement Therapy". A recent report published in the lastest issue of Journal of the American Medical Association, is the latest bad news about estrogen-progestin therapy or HRT.
Last year, the Women's Health Initiative, produced a cascade of data about the negative health effects of hormone therapy, prompting millions of American women to abandon the drugs that physicians once viewed as menopausal cure-alls.
The new data found a 24 percent increase in breast cancer risk, not much different from other studies. (For the average woman, that would increase the lifetime risk of developing breast cancer from 1 in 8 to about 1 in 7.)
This is bad news for those who are on HRT, thinking of starting HRT as well as the drug manufacturers. So before you start your HRT read this

The Mission Done Man 22.06.03
What can Lone say about Dr Mahathir's speech given when he opened the UMNO General Assembly 2003 recently. He said that he likes to call a spade a spade. So when he spent more than an hour talking about warmongering, foreign domination, and sexual deviants, should he not have referred to the Anglo-Saxons instead of the Europeans, for it was quite clear, he was talking about the Americans and the Brits and maybe the Australians. Hurling racist innuendos and other insults at all Europeans may results in many many more with hurt feelings, eg the Turks, the Canadians, the French andthe Scandinavians, then he really meant to. So much for calling a spade a spade.
The foreign press called his speech "astonishingly undiplomatic", politically incorrect", "Washington's wrath incurring" and "European race lashing". The local media was relatively silent on the western bashing and had only praises for the hard hitting speech. Read here what Mr Umar, a local citizen, has to say about the speech
The trade minister, to add insult to injury, said that Mahathir's remarks were true and could not hurt the Malaysian economy as the western businessmen based their actions only on profits. So what about those smart trade partnerships and foriegn investments that she has been promoting. Were they just talking shop talk.
Mahathir will be leaving in about 4 months and the fallouts, surely there will be, hopefully temporarily; will affect him little; but it is for the incoming PM and the rest of the country to bear with what come may.
After October, Pak Lah< will have his hands full, mending fences with not only the Americans and British but all Europeans. His hands will definitely be filled to the brim, if not overflowing, as Mahathir also wants to leave the Anwar problem for him. Is this the way, "The My Way Man" and as The Star says "The Mission Done Man" wants to depart and leave behind?

Of Bikinis, Designer Babies & Liver Cancer 21.06.03
No more ED for now, let's go on to other things. For those who are into (literally or otherwise) bikinis check this The Complete Bikini Blitz, remember this is mainly for the females among us. Bikinis are nos-nos in Kelantan & Terengganu, though there are great beaches there like Pantai Bisikan Bayu, Pantai Batu Buruk, Pantai Bachok and of course Pantai Cinta Berahi(PCB}--Beach of Passionate Love, oops, I mean Pantai Cahaya Bulan

Jamie is Britain's first designer baby; babies like Jamie who are of western design may not meet the approval of Dr M; the parents are under fire in the UK, their crtics have branded their actions as unethical. Jamie is here to save Charlie, his brother, who has a rare anaemia called Diamond Blackfan anaemia, check out DBA.UK. Jamie's parents are not taking it sitting down and have criticised their critics in return. See the report.
And finally there is new hope for those affected by liver cancer. There is a high incidence of hepatoma aka liver cancer among male Chinese Malaysians, especially those with chronic hepatitis B infection. This news can be found here. The technique involves injecting drugs directly into the tumours of patients with liver cancer. There is another injection for hepatoma and this has been around for a long while, it is the Hepatitis B vaccine, this is even better as it prevents hepatitis B infection and thereby reduces one's risks of getting hepatoma. So check this out!

More on ED 18.06.03
More not so good news for those with erectile dysfunction. Tim Whittlestone, consultant urological surgeon at Bristol Royal Infirmary says erectile dysfunction is often not an isolated condition. In more than 70 per cent of cases, there is an underlying condition, such as heart disease, diabetes, the effect of long-term smoking, excessive alcohol or raised blood pressure. He also advises any man over 45 who has failing erections to have his prostate checked. In some cases, impotence is an early sign of cancer. See the full article here.

Male Cyclists Risk Impotence, Study Says
A Belgian study says male cyclists are twice as likely to suffer from impotence as men who don't ride bikes, BBC News Online reports.
Researchers from University Hospital in Brussels tested 1,000 cyclists to determine how the sport affects their bodies. The study found that more than 60 percent of men and women reported genital discomfort.
Along with the conclusion that impotence was a major problem for male cyclists, the researchers also found that genital swelling in women riders was much more common than previously believed, BBC News Online reports.
To minimize problems, the researchers suggest cyclists sit upright whenever possible and stand on the pedals every 10 minutes.
There is also an Austrian Study and an American Study on the association between cycling and male impotence. So those who are into cycling, take note.

All this started in 1999, when a report was published in Jama which reported that "43 percent of women suffer from some form of sexual dysfunction". But lately this has been questioned and the pharmaceutical sector has been accused in collaboration with the medical sector of inventing this condition and its treatment.
